N-1-3-010.55, "Report from Canada, by Peter Jones*, <PJONES@ac.dal.ca>
Memorial University, Newfoundland was the host of the sixth annual
Canadian Research and Education Networking Conference, NET 92, in
June. These conferences are an opportunity for the many network
administrators and technical staff, who collaborate throughout the
year via the Internet, to meet in person to present papers and to
socialize. This year there were reports from national and regional
networks, several technical presentations and some panel sessions.
The liveliest session was a discussion on policies for addressing
offensive material on the network. The interest was so great that the
participants continued discussing the issues for an hour beyond the
scheduled time for ending the day's formal activities. However, those
present failed to resolve the dilemma of how to retain freedom of
expression while attempting to curtail material that is grossly
offensive to women, racial groups and others. But there was agreement
that network operators should not turn their back on this issue.
The CANARIE (Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research,
Industry and Education) project was the subject both of the keynote
address by Ms. Jocelyn Ghent-Mallett of Industry Science and
Technology Canada, and of a panel session. Conference attendees
learned that the outcome of this project will likely be a program with
four major elements:
- immediate support for upgrading CA*net to
T1 bandwidths;
- support for the development of advanced
networking products, software and
applications;
- the establishment of a high-speed
experimental test network on which to test
these products;
- support for the migration of these advanced
networking products to an operational high-
speed network that will eventually succeed
CA*net.
CA*net held its annual general meeting and a board of directors
meeting during the NET 92 conference. The following new officers were
elected for the next 12 months: Mr. Gerry Miller (University of
Manitoba) Chair, Mr. David Macneil, (University of New Brunswick)
Vice-chair and Secretary, and Dr. Andy Bjerring (University of Western
Ontario) Treasurer. The CA*net board decided to establish a full-time
position of Executive Director of CA*net, thus relieving the honourary
officers and board members of much of the administrative work. The
board also agreed to further upgrade some of the CA*net links. The
bandwidths of the CA*net link now vary from 56 Kbps to T1.
